TRAVELERS should avoid buying jewelry in small stores around Southeast Asia, a local testing center warned yesterday, saying tests of precious stones bought in several countries show a large number were far less valuable than buyers were led to believe.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) – Police are searching for a group of jewel thieves who have robbed several high-end jewelry stores in the region.

The robberies all happen during regular business hours in broad daylight. Men, wearing ski caps and masks and at times brandishing guns, smash glass cases and grab thousands of dollars worth of jewelry. They enter and make their getaway all within a few minutes.

SAMARINDA – Seiring dengan berfluktuasinya harga emas di pasar dunia, harga emas untuk pasar lokal juga senantiasa berubah. Setelah sempat naik cukup siginifikan hingga mencapai harga Rp212 ribu minggu lalu (emas 24 karat, sebagai patokan), saat ini harga emas di pasaran lokal mulai turun, berkisar Rp165 hingga Rp191 ribu. Kendati demikian, beberapa pedagang mengakui jumlah transaksi tidak banyak mengalami perubahan alias stabil.

Hendy, dari Toko Mas Bahagia di Kompleks Citra Niaga menuturkan, sejak dua bulan belakangan ini, hampir setiap hari harga emas berubah-ubah. The bright sequins and fake gems that sparkled on necks and wrists and, well, everywhere, last summer are being pushed to the side as organic materials, such as woods and horns and volcanic stone, take prominence in summer fashion.

One reason, says Talya Cousins, jewelry market editor for Jewelry W magazine, is that going natural is a reflection of a summer attitude, and the colors complement this clothing season’s neutral palette. “I think it goes for what we’ve seen in the 2006 spring collection, more subtle things that go with the skin,” Cousins said.
