Mr. Rahul Mehta,President, The Clothing Manufacturers Association of India (CMAI), in a pre-budget memorandum sent to the Hon’ble Union Finance Minister, has urged that import duty on all machinery for use in the garment industry and accessories should be charged at a fixed 5% duty, without CVD or any other charges.

Indus Fila is expanding its garment capacity to meet the rising demand in the international market through an IPO.
The manufacturer and exporter of fabric and apparel, Indus Fila (IFL), is entering the capital market with an issue of Rs 89.6 crore at a price band of Rs 170-185. The company is aggressively increasing its existing capacities with an investment of about Rs 163.6 crore.
Indus Fila, which drives about 90 per cent of its revenue from the export market is looking at a turnover of Rs 240 crore in FY07 and Rs 350 crore in FY08. Read more about From fabric to garment …

An expected downturn in US clothing demand is adding to the woes of Asian garment makers already struggling because of rising costs and stronger currencies.
In China, which just three years ago was entangled in a trade dispute with the US and the European Union over export quotas, concerns have switched to the spiralling costs that are eroding its competitive advantage.
