Labor sanctions garment manufacturer for untimely filing of renewal, appeal

The Department of Labor has sanctioned a garment manufacturer for its untimely filing of appeal on the denial of its renewal application for an ironer.

Labor Administrative Hearing Officer Jerry Cody also determined that Kyung Seung Saipan Inc. also untimely filed the 2014 renewal application for the ironer, Shaofa Su.

KATHMANDU: The winds of change that began blowing through Nepal, after Maoist guerrillas returned to parliament, ending a decade-old civil war, has put fresh heart in the kingdom’s ailing industrial sector, with ITC becoming the first to launch a new venture.

The tobacco giant that holds the majority shares in Nepal’s single largest taxpaying company, Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd, has put in an initial investment of NRS 250 million ($3.7 million) to construct a state-of-the-art garments factory in Biratnagar, a key town in eastern Nepal where Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala began his career in politics more than six decades ago as a trade union activist. Garment company Sam Kwang Corp. closing tomorrow

Garment manufacturer Sam Kwang Saipan Corp. is shutting down its factory in Afetnas tomorrow, Saturday, but most of its 157 alien workers are opting to stay and find new employers.

Labor investigator Carlos Camacho disclosed that of the 157 guest workers at Sam Kwang, only 45 have decided so far to go back to China after the closure. The 112 remaining guest workers want to look for jobs here. Read more about Garment company Sam Kwang Corp. closing tomorrow …

OUT of several hundred odd garment factories in Mirpur area at least one hundred remained virtually closed for three days in the current week due to demonstration by workers of garment factories and clashes between agitating workers and the police. Thousands of workers, including women, came out of their workplaces and participated in demonstrations at different locations.
