DHAKA, Mar 23 Asia Pulse – Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) yesterday urged the government to formulate a policy on the operations of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT).
BGMEA also suggested the policy be developed in a transparent manner through consensus of all concerned
In a board meeting, the peak body for the apparel sector, underscored the need for discussions with the Chittagong City Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury to mitigate the tussle between the mayor and the government over government’s move to commercialise container handling at the NCT.
The apparel sector leaders requested the government remain alert so that the normal activities of Chittagong Port are not disrupted due to the NCT debate.
In terms of export-import consignments, BGMEA is one of the main users of the port. So, any delays will be a matter of grave concern, noted the organisation in a statement.
BGMEA expressed the view that transforming the Chittagong Port into an efficient and dynamic facility utilizing modern handling methods was a matter of urgency.(UNB)
