With the deluge of options in the jewelry industry today, there has to be a palpable edginess and creativity for magazines like Vogue to notice. After appearances in both Vogue and Lucky magazines, Made Her Think jewelry is both girly and edgy enough to be relevant.

What has started as a side project has grown into a successful, unique line of jewelry that is constantly expanding. With several collections under her belt, Kahn’s latest pieces are her most complex; wittily and subtly referencing her inspirations and everyday influences

“I am influenced by whatever is around me, culturally and emotionally,” Kahn said. Mini scrolls, feathers, hearts, and other charms are featured prominently in the latest collection. Two major themes within her lines are skulls and the macabre and bows, hearts, ribbons, and other girly accoutrements. In combining the two extremes, the jewelry is unique, current, and versatile. Her designs have evolved from one-of-a-kind pieces focused on charms and accoutrements to, as demand heightened, more refined items that still remained true to their ability to look one-of-a-kind. Kahn says that she has incorporated more necklaces into the line, as well as generally making it less charm-based, in order to achieve more flexibility within the look of the pieces.

Women of all ages love Kahn’s jewelry, and Kahn’s target customer is just as varied. She said she designs for someone who, “in general, is more feminine, but still wants an edginess … there’s no particular age or specific customer.”

Kahn’s favorite piece she has designed thus far is the large heart from the Rustic Love collection, which looks like a well-loved vintage necklace. The charm, in varying sizes, is carried throughout the collection with other pieces that come about naturally. “I grab bits and pieces, and I lay it before me. I sort of stumble upon it, I like to keep it a little more abstract and not as literal.” Kahn describes the design process as “purely emotional and visceral, and that gets translated” into her jewelry. The evolution to oversized pieces, she said, was similarly organic.

Recently, the jewelry customer has become interested in more personal, thoughtful items, and Made Her Think offers a well-edited assortment of pieces that all look genuinely unique, so much so that they seem to have their own narrative. Looking nearly vintage, the pieces are clean while still being eye-catching. The separate collections within the line, categorized by their influences and usually sharing several similar, distinguishable features, are all tied together by Kahn’s liberal use characteristic charms, techniques, and silhouettes that are spread throughout each piece in her line.

Clearly, the thoughtfulness put into the line is paying off. As Made Her Think continues its success, Kahn looks to the future where she hopes to expand her influence to “establish herself as a designer, and to really establish a brand.” Stemming from her particular desires, Kahn has started producing silk scarves with this collection, partly to gauge the customers reaction and partly because she wanted them herself. “There’s something for everyone, but in a high-end way. It’s fashion jewelry – but definitely more refined.”

The jewelry is available in select boutiques nationwide, as well as internationally, locally at Zoe in Princeton, NJ, and on www.madeherthink.com.
