SURAT: The city, which happens to be country’s synthetic textile hub, is set to take a giant leap in garment manufacturing. If the office-bearers

Park at Sachin, some 10 km away from here, are to be believed then around 20 garment manufacturing units are likely to start operation by the end of 2014.
Leading garment manufacturers such as Banswara Syntex Limited (BSL), Fairdeal Filament Private Limited and Safari Apparels have set up their garment manufacturing units at Apparel Park.
Sources said the park has seven garment manufacturing units with a total annual turnover of about Rs 50 crore. Three similar units owned by local manufacturers will be made operational by July 2014, taking the total number of such units to 10.
About 2,000 workers are employed in the seven garment-manufacturing units, which manufacture a range of garments including shirts, trousers and laces. The total requirement of the workers would be around 900 by July 2014.
Ajoy Bhattacharya, president of garment manufacturers of Apparel Park at Sachin, said, “After the synthetic fabric hub, Surat is moving at a fast pace to become garment hub. We expect around 20 garment manufacturing units to start operation by the end of 2014.”
He said until now, the Apparel Park was facing certain issues related to exemptions under SEZ Act. Nevertheless, issues will be sorted out in the next few months with the development commissioner, who is taking an active part in the development of Apparel Park.
Kirti Patel, owner, Safari Apparel, who was the first to set up garment manufacturing unit at Sachin Apparel Park with Rs 8 crore worth of annual turnover, said, “Surat is taking a giant leap in garment manufacturing. In the coming day, the textile hub is likely to transform into garment hub with many players showing interest to set up their units.”
