Fiji’s garment industry under threat: Halabe warns
Fiji Times, Fiji
The garment industry would be most affected if trade sanctions were placed on Fiji in the event of a coup, says leading garment industry figure Mark Halabe.
The managing director of Mark One Apparel said his customers were concerned that sanctions would be placed on Fiji if there was an overthrow of the Government.
Mr Halabe sanctions would place 8000 jobs at risk and would damage a $100million industry.
“If these sanction (trade or otherwise)effect the flow of commercial goods and services in and out of Fiji then the garment industry will be effected with production being moved away to our competitors,” he said. “This will lead to further losses of employment, export income and investment that Fiji desperately needs.”
“Our customers do not want a made in Fiji label on their productif we have an unconstitutional government. The negative international branding of made in Fiji will force our customers to seek other countries to manufacture their goods.”
