Properties worth over Tk 5 lakh were gutted in a devastating fire at a garments and sweater factory at the city’s busy GEC intersection on Wednesday night.

However, there was no casualty since the incident occurred when the workers had left the factory after work.

Meanwhile, two workers of KTS textile and garments factory, who sustained severe burns in the February 23 fire, died yesterday raising the death toll in the worst-ever factory fire in the country to 63.

Fire Service sources said a fire broke out at the storehouse of Intimate Garment and Sweater Factory on the fifth floor of the Central Plaza Shopping Centre at around 11:00pm. The fire spread fast, engulfing the whole floor.

Fourteen fire fighting units from the city’s different fire stations rushed to the spot and managed to extinguish the blaze after a three- hour effort.

Fire brigade sources said the fire might have originated from electric short-circuit.

Two KTS workers Al Amin, 20, and Dipa Dhar, 17, died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) at around 12:30am and 5:30am yesterday respectively, sources said.

Both of them were undergoing treatment at the surgery ward but were later shifted to the ICU on deterioration of condition.

Among the 49 KTS fire victims admitted to the CMCH eight succumbed to their injuries so far. They are Moni, Mohammed Hannan, Monir, Kamrun Nahar, Nasima Akter, Jhumki Das, Al Amin and Dipa, hospital sources said.
