First SLAF garment factory opens

The Sri Lanka Air Force has achieved a unique level under the leadership of Commander Air Marshal Roshan Goonetileke, Secretary to the President Lalith C. Weeratunga said as chief guest at the opening of the first garment factory of the Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit yesterday

“The Air Force Commander has created history,” Weeratunga said.

He said that knowing the importance of teamwork is a real leader’s quality.

Weeratunga added that this initiative of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit is unique in a backdrop where President Mahinda Rajapaksa plans to create a terror-free country along with the eradication of poverty.

Seventy seven percent of the country’s population are living in the village.

Hence, all the contributions towards upgrading the income generation of rural communities is of great importance,” Weeratunga added.

“With the Government’s efforts we were able to reduce the poverty level from 21 percent to 15 percent by this year,” he said.

He said the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit initiative of this highly responsible project, under its Chairperson Nelun Goonetileke is a major contribution to eradicate poverty.

This supports the Government’s efforts as well.

The SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit opened their first garment factory at SLAF camp in Sigiriya by catering to a portion of the SLAF’s entire clothing requirements.

Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Goonetileke, SLAF SVU Chairperson Nelun Goonetileke, several senior Air Force personnel and SVU members participated. Under the Marian Goonetileke Memorial Fund, the SLAF SVU awarded ten school children of servicemen with scholarships.
