THE 54.9 per cent decline in the manufacturing sector in 2005 was driven by the substantial fall in production in the garment industry, says government statistician Timoci Bainimarama.
Production in the manufacturing sector dropped from $173.6million in 2004 to $78.3million in 2005.
In a statement yesterday, Mr Bainimarama said production of garment fell by 59.2 per cent in 2005 and this was mainly because of the closure of a large garment factory.
“Other declines were registered as other food industries by 3.2 per cent from $38.1million in 2004 to $36. 9million in 2005,” he said.
