The Government has focused attention on the propaganda carried out locally and internationally by a certain group with the intention of depriving the country of advantages gained through selective tax concessions in the exportation of garments.
The bogus propaganda, alleged to have been carried out by a Non Governmental Organization , stipulates that conditions laid down by the European Community to obtain tax relief could not be fulfilled without amending the constitution. The Sources point out that however the Government position in this regard was substantiated by a recent Supreme Court verdict, which stated that the rights, subjected to controversy, have been appropriately established in the local legal system.
The Sources also point out that a document containing false information on this issue has been distributed in London recently by a person having close connections with the Tiger Organization. They add Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe has conveyed similar information to the Commissioner of External Relations of the European Union Benita Waldener.
It has also been reported that the UNP has sent a statement condemning human rights violations in the country to the Trade Commissioner of the European Union Peter Mandelson.
The Director of Government Information in a media release says the statement had been issued few hours before a meeting between the Commissioner and the Minister of International Trade Affairs, with the objective of discrediting the country.
