Indian Jewelry Exports Threatened by Lawmaker’s Bill

The Indian jewelry industry, hit hard by the recent flooding of Surat, Gujarat, faces another threat-this time by legislation proposed in the United States.

Congressman Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) has introduced a bill that seeks to end the U.S. president’s power to grant competitive needs limitations waiver-a key regulation that allows tariff-free Indian jewelry exports-to products whose exports under the Generalized System of Preferences exceed $1.5 billion.
