Kinds of Woven in Indonesia

The work patterns of weaving craftsmen throughout Indonesia are relatively similar. They started by getting the raw materials mostly to find their own drying, thinning, and then knitting. The equipment they uses is generally still simple, such as: cutting knives, thinning knives, pliers and pincers.

In the woven art, there are various kinds of weave. The following are the kinds of woven:

Mengkuang Woven
Mengkuang is woven made from mengkuang leaves. The products are hoods, or serving mat.

Pandan Woven
Pandanus woven made of pandanus leaves. Basically pandanus leaves have many advantages. Because the characteristics it has, if used according to need will be useful. Pandan leaves have long and strong fibers, so they are very good to be used as a base for various products. Especially for woven materials, the processing of prickly pandan leaves is a little more complicated than other woven materials. Examples of pandanus matting are like wall hangings.

Reed Woven
The reed is a clumping plant, with root fiber branches, hollow, and hard. Reed plants are also widely used for various crafts or wickerwork.

Rattan Woven
Rattan woven made of rattan which has been processed. Rattan is a creeping plant whose stems are used for various items or furniture (such as chairs, ropes, bracelets). Rattan is a climbing thorny palm and the most important non-timber forest product in Indonesia. The word rattan in Malay is derived from the word “raut” which means peeling (peeling), smoothing.

Stick Woven
Stick is the bone of palm leaves (palm and so on). Woven sticks are made from coconut sticks.
