BANGKOK, Aug 4 (TNA) — The Labour Ministry has set up a mobile unit at the Thai Silp South East Import Export Co. garment factory in Samut Prakan province to help find jobs to laid-off workers and seek severance pay for employees of the company which will shut down Tuesday due to heavy losses, a senior ministry official said Saturday.

Manoon Punyakariyakorn, director-general of the Employment Department, said about 5,000 laid-off workers of the firm could register with the ministry’s mobile unit and apply for benefits from the company.

He said 3,500 jobs in garment and textile factories are now available for the laid-off workers as entrepreneurs from 42 firms in Samut Prakan, near Bangkok, would directly accept job applications on that day while another 5,500 jobs in Bangkok and surrounding areas are also available.

A total of about 15,000 jobs are currently available for these workers, said Mr. Manoon.

To protect workers from becoming jobless as there are signs that other businesses will close, Mr. Manoon said 10 task force units from his department had been set up in Samut Prakan to process applications from workers that might become jobless and provide employment advice. (TNA)-E111
