Makeshift garment bazaar gutted

Bhubaneswar (PTI): As many as 80 temporary garment shops were gutted in a devastating fire at Saheed Nagar area here early on Wednesday.

According to the fire brigade, the fire broke out around 3.30 am when many people were sleeping inside shops. There was, however, no casulty in the incident, they said.

‘The entire market was reduced to ashes within 30 minutes even as fire tenders were pressed into service’, said fire officer Jenamai Ranjan Bidhu Sekhar, adding the extent of damage due to the fire was being ascertained.

Local residents believe that short circuit or mosquito coil could have sparked off the blaze but the actual cause of the fire was yet to be established.

Shop ownwers from within the state and outside set up temporary garment stalls at Saheed Nagar every year before major festivals like Raja and Sabitri puja.
