Critic’s Pick
If you’ve checked out the big jewelry exhibit at the Walters, or even just admired artisan pieces at local fairs and wondered what it would take to create something so intricate and beautiful, here is your chance to find out. MICA is throwing open the doors to its jewelry center in Meadow Mill, just a polished stone’s throw from the Woodberry light rail stop. Wander where the magic happens–between rows of work benches, through the torch room, the forging room and kilns for enameling–and get a sense of how a stone is set, how brass is cast, or, as students quickly learn, how to keep a torch from exploding. Check out a slideshow of faculty and student work, meet the staff, and sate your artistic curiosity. That’s probably how they got their start, you know. (Tim Hill)
