Nominations begin for Vietnam garment industry award
Thanh Nien Daily, Vietnam

Producing import substitution goods and clothing industry accessories have been named among the top criteria for nomination to a Vietnamese textile industry award.

Le Quoc An, chairman of the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas), said screening of apparel businesses had begun for the award given away by Vitas and Saigon Economics Times magazine belonging to Saigon Times Group.

Over 200 candidates from the state, private, and foreign sectors were expected to be considered.

The prizes would be classified into three categories, namely best performing business in the textile industry, top 10 textile enterprises, and the best performing business in garment categories.

The criteria for nomination include business efficiency, growth, export performance, domestic market share, brand development, environmental protection, and labor relations.

An said import replacement and producing feedstock for the textile industry were key in the competition with powerful rival China with Vietnam about to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Vietnam hopes to become a world leader in textiles and has drawn up ambitious plans spanning manufacture, quality, and trademarks to achieve the goal.

The country ranks 16th among 153 clothing producers and exporters and has set its sights on climbing into the top 10 by 2014. For that, it would have to double exports to US$10 billion.

It targets export revenues of $5.6 billion this year despite the fierce competition from neighbor and global giant China.
