New garment factory opened at Hasalaka
COLOMBO: The Minister of Investment Promotion Mr. Navin Dissanayake opened a new garment factory at Hasalaka, Mahiyangana.
The Factory, originally opened by garment industry pioneer Kumar Devapura, is recently taken over by the Sumithra Group of Companies.
The Minister said that this factory is very important to the welfare of the people in the region. He said often the focus has been on negative news such as the prevailing conflict, but there are also positive events such as the opening of a factory that has provided employment to so many young people in a lesser-developed part of the country.
The factory is a project that comes under the 300 Enterprises Programme of the BOI. The BOI encourages investors to set up a project in each one of the 300 Divisional Secretariats outside of Colombo and Gampaha under this scheme.
The Nipayun Sri Lanka Programme has advanced considerably since its establishment over a year ago. To date a total 230 projects have been approved by the BOI out of a total of 300. These enterprises have played a part in alleviating some of hardships faced by the populations of these areas.
The project established in Hasalaka will provide 600 new jobs in the Mahiyangana and Hasalaka areas. It will boost Sri Lanka’s garment industry, which is one of the major employers as well as export sector in the country. Sri Lanka’s garment industry is a dynamic sector but needs to be strong enough to face the challenges emerging from overseas competition.
Sumithra Group is a significant player in the garments industry, operating four factories in various parts of the country and providing employment to 2,700 workers. The group’s latest plant at Hasalaka is a state-of –the –art factory specializing in the manufacture of woven apparel. The factory specializes in the manufacture of trousers.
Sumithra Garments (Pte) Ltd. has gained recognition as a manufacturer and exporter of quality ready made garments to the United States, Canadian and European markets.
The company was established in 1984.
