Wood has become an integral part of people’s daily lives. There are many things that can be used from wood. Starting from being a material for making home furnishings, to materials for making houses. Since humans were not familiar with cement and bricks, houses were built and constructed from various kinds of wood. In some areas, even traditional wooden houses are still being maintained. This is even an interesting thing for tourists.
Not only houses, ships are still using wood as the main material. Both large fishing boats and small outrigger boats. A number of home decorating trinkets are made of wood, such as wall sizes, photo frames, or just displays. For a large size, wood is also the main material for various home furniture, such as guest chairs, patio chairs, cabinets, and various other furniture.
The minimal benefit of wood is being used as firewood. This is still mostly done in rural areas which have always used wood as fuel, rather than gas or kerosene.
Luckily those who live in Indonesia. Each side of nature is exotic, providing various resources that are much needed by humans. The diversity of the existing flora is a blessing for the surrounding community. Apart from fruits and herbal medicines that can be produced, Indonesia also has various types of wood from various plants. These woods have many benefits, ranging from making crafts and furniture to being used as a bridge construction material.
Some timber also has high economic value, so that it is exported abroad. As is known, until now the classification of timber species for trade in Indonesia is limited to only 121 types of wood. The selection and classification of wood species is only based on the results of research on wood species which are commonly known as commercial timber. This number is still very small when compared to the number of wood species in Indonesia, which reaches 4,000 species.
Trading timber is grouped into 4 groups, namely the Meranti Type Group (Commercial One Group) totaling 31 types; There are 55 mixed jungle wood species (Commercial Group II); There are 3 groups of wood species (Indah Satu group); and Beautiful Wood Type Group (Indah Dua Group) with 32 species.
