(SGT-HCMC) About 30 textile and garment enterprises joined a trading session for the sector’s machinery and materials in HCMC yesterday during a conference of the HCMC Association for Garment-Textile-Embroidery-Knitting (Agtek).

The third such trading session took place as Agtek member companies were displaying their wares at a small industry exhibition.

Agtek president Nguyen Duc Hoan said, “Although the session could not meet demand of thousands of enterprises in the sector, it helped solved certain outstanding problems faced by the industry, including material supply,” he said.

Most enterprises at the session said Agtek-arranged material trading sessions worked well pending a textile and garment material trading center which the city has been building over the past three years but construction work has yet to be complete.

The city has now some 10,000 textile and garment producers, 172 of them foreign-invested enterprises.

The industry contributes 12% of the city’s total industrial production value and 40% of the national textile and garment output.

In the first past six months, the nation’s textile and garment exports amounted to US$2.74 billion, up 32.7% year-on-year, with the U.S. market accounting for US$1.1 billion, up 41%.
