The tough economy has some Central Georgians digging through their jewelry boxes and attics, searching for gold and silver to sell.
Cash 4 gold held a gold exchange on Saturday at the Goodwill Convention Center.
Employees say people walk away with anywhere from $1 to thousands.
Beverly Whisby did some cleaning out her jewelry box and headed to the exchange.
“It’s just lingering around the house so that’s why I’m just gonna go on and get rid of it you know,” said Whisby.
She bagged up old rings and necklaces and even some broken jewelry, hoping for good return.
“I figure it’ll help me pay some of my bills that I’m behind on,” she said, and she wasn’t alone.
“I had some jewelry that I wasn’t wearing it was old some was broken up,” Cartisha Tumblin.
“I brought in some old rings, earring bracelets just stuff I never wear anymore,” said Kelley Sorrow.
Ursula Pruitt with Cash 4 Gold says she sees more than 100 people a day wanting to trade up their gold and silver for some extra funds.
“Basically because the economy is so bad, it’s kinda like an avenue for people get a little financial relief,” she said.
Employees at Cash 4 Gold say if you want to bring some jewelry in you should check it at home first. All you have to do is take a piece of magnet and brush it up against the pieces. If it happens to pick up a little bit then you know you shouldn’t bother brining it in.
“Some of my friends go to pawn shops and sell jewelry or whatever,” said Whisby, and from her own experiences at the shops she only expected to make $30 or $40 dollars, So imagine her surprise when she got the grand total, $530.74.
“What? Show me the money!” cried Whisby. She says they check she received left her with enough to pay her bills and do a little extra shopping on the side.
Pruitt says Cash 4 Gold’s not interested in the gem stones in jewelry. If you want to keep them, you should pop them out before you bring in your pieces, because they won’t pay for them.
If you didn’t make it out to sell your jewelry on Saturday. You’ll have another chance Sunday at the Goodwill Conference Center on Eisenhower Parkway. 10 am to 5 pm. Pruitt says they’ll have another gold exchange in two weeks.
