Training centre to fuel garment sector

HCM CITY — A new training centre for the garment and textiles industry which opened yesterday in HCM City should help Viet Nam in its struggle to compete worldwide with Chinese and Indian apparel exporters.
The International Garment and Textile Training Center, a VND3.4 billion (US$212,000) joint venture of 13 garment manufacturers in HCM City, will receive technical assistance from the Mekong Private Sector Development Facility, New Zealand’s International Aid and Development Agency and Danish International Development Assistance.
The centre, on Phan Xich Long Street in Binh Thanh District, was established to help the garment industry improve its capacity in production management, marketing and merchandising and human resource management.
It will also offer training that will help companies comply with international standards on corporate social responsibility.
“With much stronger competition worldwide, especially from China, garment buyers are now demanding more and better services from producers,” Diep Thanh Kiet, the centre’s chairman, said.
He said manufacturers would lose customers if requirements were not met. “They want shorter lead and delivery time, consistent quality and competitive price,” he said.
The centre will tailor its in-house training classes and seminars on topics of industry insiders’ interest to individual company’s requirements.
“It will also provide consultation services on assessment of training demand, post-training evaluation and productivity improvement,” Kiet said.
Target groups are people working for textile and garment factories, college graduates or those who want to work in the industry, and teachers who want to improve their knowledge and skills.
Curricula are designed and delivered by both Vietnamese and foreign experts.
The textile and garment industry is the country’s second largest industry in terms of export turnover, with US$4.84 billion last year, and the leader in job creation, with more than 2 million employees. — VNS
