The death of a female garment worker in a road accident Sunday in Bangladesh’s Gazipur district, 30 km north of capital Dhaka, triggered widespread violence that left 30 people injured, private news agency UNB reported.

The injured people included 10 policemen. Three garment factories and a dozen vehicles were also damaged.

Witnesses said the accident happened when a bus hit the pedestrian about Sunday morning, killing an unidentified female garment worker on the spot.

“The accident incensed local people, including garment workers, into a frenzied protest. They set afire three passing vehicles and damaged about a dozen others, including two fire-brigade cars, and ransacked three garment factories,” said a spot report.

Police rushed in, fired teargas shells and charged baton to bring the situation under control.
