Wages Board for garment sector faces 425 objections
The New Nation, Bangladesh
The Minimum Wages Board is struggling with 425 objection letters regarding minimum wages for garment workers, which it received from both garment owners and workers.
The 26th meeting of the Board ended yesterday with no concrete decision. The Board will sit again on Thursday to finalise the minimum wages.
Earlier on 12 September the Wages Board announced the draft of three-tier minimum wage structure for readymade garment workers with the minimum pay at Tk 1604. But the amount of the minimum wages created resentment among both garment owners and workers. Garment workers say the amount was too little while the owners find the amount very high.
Following the announcement of the draft wages 425 objection letters were submitted to the board. Annisul Huq, a representative of garment owners, yesterday told newsmen that they need more time to read out the objections.
Six members of the Minimum Wages Board were present at the three hours long meeting.
