American Apparel same-store sales slip 9 percent

BusinessWeek
LOS ANGELES
Clothing retailer American Apparel Inc. said Thursday that same-store sales declined 9 percent in February.

Last February had one extra day due to a leap year.

The Los Angeles-based company said total sales rose 17 percent to $24.3 million.

Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, are a key measure of retailer performance, because they measure growth at existing stores rather than from newly opened ones.

American Apparel opened three retail stores last month, in Miami Beach, Fla., New York City and Stockholm, Sweden.
