Turning old jewelry into cold hard cash

Jackson, MS (WLBT) – In these tough economic times, it seems everyone is looking for a way to get some extra money. For some it means selling their old jewelry. With the value of gold at its highest level in years, currently at about $940 an ounce, more people are selling the precious metal for cold hard cash.

Sunday men and women gathered at a conference room at the Hilton in North Jackson to meet with members of the U.S. Gold Exchange. There the jewelry pieces are tested for their karat, weighed and given a value. Some people walked out with a check for as high as $1,000.

Madeline Caliguiro of Vicksburg received more than $300 during her first visit Saturday. She returned Sunday and said, “I just went through my jewelry box and was very surprised at what I really had and you don’t realize how much it accumulates.”

“Whether it is to pay the bills or some people say I’m going out shopping, buy some neat things. It puts money back in their pockets anyway so people can have some more cash that they did have just sitting around their house or in their drawers that they weren’t using anymore,” said Joshua Spencer advertising for U.S. Gold Exchange.

U.S. Gold Exchange will return to the Hilton March 7th and 8th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
