Setting up of Textile city to be expedited: PM Aziz

ISLAMABAD, February 15 (Online): Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has said that government will provide state-of-the-art facilities at the Textile City being set up at Karachi to help increase production and competitiveness of products.
The Prime Minister was chairing the Board meeting of Pakistan Textile City at the Prime Minister’s House Tuesday morning to review the implementation of the project.
The Prime Minister said that Textiles, the major industry of Pakistan has substantially grown during the last few years. Government is taking a number of steps to add further capacity in this sector and the establishment of textile city at Karachi will give a boost to textile industry by facilitating setting up of new industrial units and production of goods at lower costs.
“There is a need for further modernization and use of new technologies in the textile sector to get better market access globally. Government will provide the infrastructure to facilitate expansion in the sector”, the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister emphasized on the need of better coordination planning and related departments and gave instruction for early implementation of the decisions taken by the federal and provincial government to expedite the establishment of textile city.
The Prime Minister was informed that 700 acres of land have been provided for the textile city. He gave directions for early handing over of remaining 500 acres of land to the Managing Board of Textile City and instructed the Board to start the procedure for the land allotment to potential industrialist without losing further time. “A transparent mechanism should be adopted for allotment of land and all procedures in this regard should be followed”, the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister appreciated the contribution of private sector in the project. “Textile City is a good example of public private partnership”, he said.
The Prime Minster also asked the Textile Ministry to come up with proposals to set up garment cities in various cities including Karachi. “There is a great potential for the government’s production for domestic consummation and export and the government will set up garment cities to facilitate the potential entrepreneurs”, the Prime Minister said.
The meeting was attended among others by Minister for Ports and Shipping, Babar Khan Ghouri, Minister for Textile, Mushtaq Cheema, City Nazim Karachi and senior officials.
