Dhaka, Feb 26 (DPA) Rescuers in this Bangladesh capital Sunday abandoned all hopes of finding anyone alive from under the debris of a multi-storey factory building that collapsed Saturday, killing at least 20 people.
Civil defence officials said at least 20 people were killed including many women and more than 50 other were injured when five floors of a renovated building that housed an apparel factory toppled in an industrial zone in the capital
Survivors said they had heard faint sounds of mobile phones ringing from inside the rubble but there was no response.
Earlier, witnesses said hundreds of people could be trapped inside the fallen building.
“We are yet to reach the ground floor of the five-storey structure where most of the bodies of the missing people are likely to be found,” said Major Naser, chief of the army rescue team.
He rejected all possibilities of finding any living person in the ruins more than 36 hours after the mishap.
Nearly a 100 people remain missing since the disaster that happened Saturday morning.
The incident is the second in less than a year that a garment factory building collapsed, killing and wounding scores of workers. The government has ordered an enquiry.
