At least five people were killed and 25 injured when a multi-storey garment factory collapsed in the Bangladesh capital today, witnesses and hospital officials said. A doctor at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital said the wards were prepared to take in more people as fire brigade and police said rescue efforts were continuing.
Some 150 workers were inside when the Phoenix textile mill in the city’s Mahakhali area began crumbling during the morning shift. Rescuers, including fire brigade personnel, said they feared many people were still trapped under the rubble and that the army had been called in to help. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.
In April 2005, at least 74 workers were killed and hundreds were injured when a garment factory collapsed at Palashbari 30kms from Dhaka. – Reuters
