Garment industry looking at export target of $25 bn

Chennai, March 13. (PTI): The garment industry in the country is looking at achieving an export target of $25 billion by 2014-11, a top Apparel Export Promotion Council official said.

Garment exports would touch $9.3 billion this year ending March, recording a growth of 9-10 per cent over last year, AEPC Chairman Vijay Aggarwal said at the inauguration of Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) at Mogappair here.

He said to achieve the target of $25 billion, the industry would need “an additional 1.5 million people” and an investment of Rs 35,000 crore in related infrastructure.

AEPC would be setting up 50 training centres across the country, of which three would be in Chennai, he said.

The council currently has 22 centres in the country and 24,000 people. “We will be setting up six more centres by September 2014 and also an academic cell at Gurgaon,” he said.
