The provincial archives is bringing the historic Great Western Garment Company back to life through an exhibit highlighting the lives of garment workers who once worked for the famous clothing company.
The exhibit features archival photographs and clothing on loan from the Royal Alberta Museum, as well as information about the company’s history.
GWG was incorporated in 1911 and was a longtime fixture on Edmonton’s manufacturing scene, making shirts, pants and overalls. The company was bought by Levi Strauss in 1961, which closed its last North American plants — including one in Edmonton — in 2004.
Former employees have been invited to share their stories and mementoes of the company at a gathering this afternoon at the provincial archives. The exhibit at the archives, located at 8555 Roper Road, will be open to the public until April 27.
Alexandra Zabjek will have a full report on today’s reunion in Thursday’s Journal.
