Jewelry helps boost Penney’s June sales

JULY 10, 2006 – Plano, Texas — Fine jewelry was among J.C. Penney Co. Inc.’s top sellers in June, with total sales up 5 percent to nearly $1.61 billion for the five weeks ended July 1, compared to $1.54 billion last year.

Same-store sales for the fiscal period were up 4.3 percent compared to a 7.4 increase last year. In addition to jewelry, the retailer cited children’s and women’s accessories as helping to boost sales, with men’s and women’s casual sportswear also faring well

Geographically, all regions had sales gains with the best results in the western and southeastern regions of the country.

Direct sales jumped 6 percent during the period on top of a 9.1 percent increase last year. Internet sales through the company’s Web site, www.jcp.com, continued to represent the company’s fastest growing sales channel, increasing approximately 27 percent in June, on top of a 40 percent increase last year.
