Dharmapuri: In an indication of Dharmapuri becoming a garment hub, the Apparel Export and Promotion Council (AEPC) has decided to establish an Apparel Training and Design Centre (ATDC) to empower unemployed youth in this backward district.
The Centre has already given the clearance and lands are being identified in the town for establishment of the institute.
The institute will start functioning in a rented building within one month, say official sources.
“While the State Government would provide machinery at Rs. 30 lakh, the Council would provide the recurring cost. Preference would be given for Plus-Two educated youth from naxal-affected areas in the district.
To begin with, two training modules would be offered in the proposed institute for a period of 45 days each. The selected youth would be absorbed in garment units in Tirupur on completion of training, said Collector Pankaj Kumar Bansal.
More than 40 stitching units are functioning in and around Dharmapuri employing around 1,500 women. Reeling under severe shortage of skilled labourers, garment manufacturers from Tirupur, Salem, Erode and Bangalore are supplying fabric to these units. With more than 10 per cent of skilled workforce in Tirupur and Bangalore from Dharmapuri, the training institute would create a strong supply base for major garment manufacturers and the proposed textile park, which is on the anvil in Dharmapuri district.
According to Dharmapuri MP, R. Senthil, under a private venture a team of industrialists are working on getting a Scheme of Integrated Textile Park (SITP) in the district. This dream would be realised within six months, he added.
