Huge fire erupts in garment factory

A huge fire broke out at a garment-towel factory situated in Gabol Town on Tuesday morning, which completely gutted the whole factory causing loss of millions of rupees. In the fire ten firemen became unconscious due to heavy chemicals in the factory, while the chief fire officer claimed that the fire was caused due to the negligence of the staff working there.

At about 10am when the fire office received information that a huge fire had broken out at the Silver Textile Factory situated in North Karachi, Gabol Town. On receiving information the fire tenders moved to the spot, reaching the scene the firemen witnessed leaping flames with thick black smoke from the factory.

The fire officer said that at least five fire tenders were working on the spot. The KESC authorities rushed to the scene and disconnected the power besides the Sui Gas officials also rushed and disconnected the gas connection, EDO Municipal Services, Masood Alam, also reached the affected place.

The police and the law enforcing agencies (LEA) cordoned off the area and the Edhi ambulances were also present at the place. The fire fighters managed to extinguish the fire after six hours.

When contacted the Chief Fire Officer, Ehtasham, said that fire broke out due to the negligence of the workers and staff working in the factory.

He added that when they reached the factory they immediately rescued the workers and when they asked for fire fighting system installed in the factory the workers replied in the negative and they were waiting for the fire tenders for help as the factory was without fire fighting equipment.

He added that, including the five fire tenders, he also took a snorkel but could not use it because the lane in which the factory was situated was very narrow and high tension wires were very low. In the fire ten fire men of Nazimabad and Sohrab Goth stations fell unconscious due to the smoke of chemicals.

The firemen were Mohammed Iqbal, Mohammed Ali, Javed Khan, Mohammed Shahid, Abdul Kaleem, Bashir Ahmed, Mohammed Ijaz, Zaki-ur-Rehman and Faruq Raza.
