The Chittagong Development Authority has undertaken a housing project for female garment workers at Saltghola in the city’s Patenga area, involving Tk 100 crore.

Under the project, 1,000-bed dormitory and 100 small flats would be constructed, and the implementation of the project would begin within next six months, CDA sources said.

On completion of the project, two-bed flats would be sold to garment workers in easy instalments while the dormitory floors to garment owners for providing female workers with housing facility.

The sources said they would also provide the garment workers with civic amenities such as shopping mall, hospital and playground.

Shah Mohammad Akhter-uddin, chairman of the CDA, said they had already sent the project proposal to the housing and public works ministry for approval.

‘We are hopeful that we can start implementing the project by six months.’

They would take up more projects at different parts of the city in the future to deal with the housing problems of the garment workers, he added.

MA Salam, first vice-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, told this correspondent that the female garment workers had been facing hassles to reach their workplaces from different parts of the city.

‘We have also been facing shortage of female workers for few years as many of them have returned to their village homes due to housing problem.’

The project would help ease the problem, he added.
