SANDWICH, Mass.—Two 17-year-old entrepreneurs are hoping that wearing dead bugs becomes the newest fashion trend.
Katheryn Maloney and Brady Cullinan of Sandwich are selling jewelry made out of the cicadas that swarmed Cape Cod this summer.
The pair charges $10 for earrings or necklaces made out of the lacquered insect carcasses.
They tell the Cape Cod Times that some people find them gross, but others are impressed with how unique they are.
Maloney and Cullinan began making the bug jewelry in mid-June after Cullinan’s mother suggested the idea.
Beth Nyhan of Sandwich bought earrings for herself and her sister Tuesday at the local farmers market. The 66-year-old woman says she likes cicadas because they’re gentle and don’t bite.
