American Apparel debuts at NorthPark Center

Three years after American Apparel opened its first Texas shop at Mockingbird Station, the West Coast label is giving Dallas a double dip with a new boutique at NorthPark Center.

Candy-colored mannequins flaunt the line’s staples: form-fitting tanks, tees, swimwear, workout gear and jackets for men and women (look for children’s wear by year-end) and accessories such as chunky, retro glasses that would make Sally Jessy Raphael proud.

We also found sales associates (whose workday attire, enviably, encompasses comfy shorts and zip-up hoodies) showing off the company’s new thermochromatic wear: lightweight tees that change color according to your body heat and touch.
American Apparel is the brainchild of 39-year-old Dov Charney, who has drawn controversy for, among other things, the company’s often risqué ad campaigns featuring many of the stores’ own employees.

On the opposite extreme, the label has earned respect for its anti-sweatshop stance and for making its clothing on U.S. soil in its downtown LA warehouse.
Speaking of, here’s a twist: The retailer opened its first stores in China this spring – stocked with goods made from its factory in America.
