Textile Crafts: Definition and Examples

Indonesian handicrafts have been widely recognized in various countries in the world. One of the crafts that have been known abroad is textile crafts, for example batik. Textile craft is a craft that uses textile materials. Textiles come from fibers that processed into yarn and cloth. From cloth then processed into various clothes and handicrafts. The fiber materials used for textiles usually come from filament fibers, staple fibers, natural fibers, or synthetic fibers.

Textile crafts have been around for a long time. The art of textile crafts has long been recognized by the Arabs. This recognition is through trade relations between Arabs and other countries such as China, which is known as woven silk. Then India with cotton cloth and European countries. In 960 AD marks the beginning of textile fabric production in Persia with its industrial center in Khorasan, the Soghdia region which is famous for its production of silk fabrics. Furthermore, the growth and development of the silk textile industry in Persia continued until the 14th century. The silk textiles are decorated with beautiful miniature drawings. Textile craft is growing very rapidly with various interesting works or types.

Batik Crafts
Batik craft is a work of art that has high art and has been recognized throughout the world. Batik is not just a unique piece of cloth with a motif. But batik deviates from the philosophy of persistence, and pride. Batik has become a world cultural heritage belonging to Indonesia after being stipulated by the Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on October 2, 2009.

Weaving Crafts
Weaving is a handicraft of material (cloth) made of yarn (cotton, silk, etc) by inserting the weft crosswise into the warp. Each region in Indonesia has its own distinctive motifs and characteristics in the weaving craft. For example, woven fabrics originating from various regions in Indonesia such as Toraja, Sintang, Jepara, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, Flores to Timor.

Macrame Crafts
Macramé is the result of textile crafts with knot techniques that use rope or yarn. Macramé is usually used as a decoration in fashion accessories and other items because it is decorative.
