98 Percent of Indonesian Fishery Products Received by Countries in the World

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that 98 percent of Indonesia’s marine and fishery sector products were received in export destination countries. This is based on the performance records of the Fish Quarantine and Fishery Product Safety Quality Control (BKIPM).

Meanwhile, the export value of various commodities has increased, for example, the export value of vaname shrimp increased from USD 1.66 billion in 2020 to USD 1.7 billion in 2021, and the export value of tuna from USD 419.82 million in 2020 to USD 432.86 million in 2021.

The Covid-19 pandemic is claimed to be the main cause of the current world trade disruption, including the trade in fishery products where the total export value of global fishery products reached USD 152 billion, down 7% compared to 2019.

However, while all major exporters of fishery products have also experienced a decline in export value, the good news is that exports of Indonesian fishery products have actually increased and Indonesia has risen 2 places to be in position 8 as the main exporter of world fishery products in 2020.

Indonesia, which has abundant fishery resources, has moved to supply nutritious fishery products that are needed by the global community during the Covid-19 pandemic. The increase in Indonesia’s ranking as the world’s main exporter is a hard work between exporters, the government and all stakeholders involved.

When viewed based on commodities based on ITC Trademap data, Shrimp is still the leading commodity, followed by Tuna – Skipjack (TCT) and Squid – Cuttlefish – Octopus (CSG), Crab – Crab and Seaweed. During 2020, the export value of Indonesian Shrimp reached USD 2.04 billion or 8.8% of the total import value of world Shrimp. Meanwhile, TCT amounted to USD724 million (5.0%), CSG amounted to USD509 million (6.0%), crabs – crabs amounted to USD368 million (6.8%) and Seaweed amounted to USD280 million (11.4%).

The export destination countries for fishery commodities include the United States (US) which recorded transactions amounting to USD1.1 billion or 44.4% of the total export value. Followed by China at USD382.9 million or 14.8% of the total export value and Japan at USD278.9 million (10.8%). Then ASEAN countries amounted to USD270.1 million (10.4%), the European Union amounted to USD132.0 million (5.1%), and Australia amounted to USD55.2 million (2.1%).
