India : Uttaranchal Govt. to host Expos to boost handicrafts

To promote the sales of local handloom products, the Uttaranchal government has launched new schemes and is planning to arrange exhibitions in Dehra Dun and various other regions.
Government has also granted Rs246.09 lakh to support weavers and renew the wollen and cotton product sectors.
Small loans are also being extended to these weavers and artisans.
The government has launched the Uttaranchal Handloom and Handicraft Development Council, which will work as a central agency to enhance various artisan products.
Other 26 weavers’ federations have been set up in the state.
The handicraft centers at Kashipur in Kumaon have been revamped with state-of-the-art machineries and computers.
Weavers and artisans are being provided with new and more modern designs through computers.
Government is also taking the help of educational institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology for improvising designs.
Officials claim that more than 500 weavers have been benefited from the new schemes.
Silk has been accorded with special importance. New looms are being set to help local weavers to design new silk saris.
A handicraft fair that began this week at Parade Ground, Dehra Dun, has helped in raising tremendous interest among localites with weavers doing a business worth more than Rs1 crore, so far.
More such shows are in the offing in other parts of the state, siources said.
