The Consulate-General of Japan at Chennai, ABK-AOTS Dosokai, Tamil Nadu Centre, Chennai, in association with Japan Foundation, Tokyo, organised the Japanese Handcrafted Form: Traditions and Techniques exhibition from January 9h to January 17 at Lalit Kala Akademi, Greams Road, Chennai.
The exhibition introduced Japanese traditional arts and crafts, which have developed within the context of daily life such as ceramics, dyeing, metalwork, lacquerware, wood and bamboo work, and papermaking along with works by craft artists who continue to use traditional techniques to produce highly creative pieces at various locations around the country. About 90 works were on display in the exhibition.
The arts and craft works, which were on display here not only showed the rich and thoughtful history of the development of the art form but also expressed the changes in the social conditions and classifications in Japan. It, therefore, indirectly provided a better understanding of the nature of Japan as reflected in the art and clay works of today.
Yuji Okada, Acting Consul General of Japan in Chennai, inaugurated the exhibition on January 9.
