SHOWING APPRECIATION: Grassroots leaders from Tampines showing Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong their Chinese calligraphy of the words “prosperity” and “dragon” during the Chinese New Year Garden Party at the Istana on Sunday.

PM Lee’s name, Loong, means dragon in Chinese.

The party is hosted annually by Lee and other Cabinet ministers to show appreciation to grassroots volunteers for their community work.

Some 4,000 volunteers and their spouses mingled with the dignitaries, who included President S.R. Nathan, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

To add to the festivities, there was a Chinese calligraphy demonstration, a multiracial handicraft display and a performance by the Keat Hong Chinese Orchestra of the Chua Chu Kang Community Club. – STpic
