NCC initiates national policy for handicrafts

The National Craft Council (NCC) will prepare a national formula and policy which would evaluate the standards and values of local art and crafts. This would be done at future provincial and national handicraft exhibitions.
Under this program, the NCC is expected to organize workshops and seminars islandwide. Over 2000 local handicraftsmen are expected to participate.
The NCC will educate and make awareness these handicraftsmen about new national formula and policies through these programs.
The NCC will plan this national policy based on proposals and ideas by organising open forum between local handicraftsmen and panel of Judges of NCC. The first workshop and the seminar will be conducted in the Western Province.
NCC will considers various problems and difficulties of the craftsmen when they participat and present their craft items at provincial and national exhibitions. This year the National Handicraft Exhibition proposed to be conduct under certain rules and conditions by moving away from the traditional frame.
The NCC has noted the gradual decline of quality in local arts and craft at national and international exhibitions for the past few years due to low utilisation of technology.
The NCC expects to introduce various concepts to create local arts and crafts on modern requirements. The NCC will educates local craftsmen through workshops and seminars throughout the country. These programs will be held at Kurunegala, Anurdapura, Kandy, Ratnapura, Kegalla and Badulla, districts.
